Houston and the EMDA Fall Convention #EMDAhouston

Our thoughts are with the people of Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

With the EMDA Fall Convention scheduled for November 7-9 in Houston, we’ll keep members updated as we learn more from our convention partners in the Houston area.

  • The Hyatt Regency Houston hotel has remained dry and fully functioning during the storm.
  • Houston’s convention campus / Avenida Houston and surrounding hotels sustained no damage (this includes the Hyatt Regency Houston).
  • Both airports (HOU and IAH) reopened on August 30 at 4 p.m. with limited service, with full service expected by the weekend. Service remains limited at both airports on August 31.
  • We’ll be checking on off-site locations in the next week, after they’ve had a chance to assess any damage and get through this week.

City of Houston Relief Response

City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods. The fund will be housed at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Donations can be made to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund here: https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief/.

Our friends at the Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association say it best: “Among ways we plan to contribute to the recovery is simply by being there in November, dining in city restaurants, visiting local attractions, and demonstrating our confidence in the city’s comeback effort.”

EMDA’s email was spoofed

It’s always something —

Whether it’s someone trying to convince you that hotel rooms at EMDA convention are almost gone, or yet another email ‘advertising’ the availability of attendee lists, they’re ALL scams. Now we’re adding “Email Spoofing” to our list of warnings.

Last Tuesday, several members received what looked to be an email from EMDA supposedly informing them of a mandatory requirement for members to update membership information on a new platform.

While staff is working on adding member-only section to EMDA web site, we do not have a “new requirement and platform” as noted in the scam email.

My first thought when I learned about the emails was that I’d been hacked. What I subsequently learned is that my email had actually been “spoofed.” In general terms, if you’ve been hacked you’re very likely not able to access your email account. Another clue: If you have email in your Sent folder that you did NOT send: Your account has been compromised (hacked). But that’s not what happened to EMDA.

Spoofing is when a spammer sends out emails using your email address in the From: field. The idea is to make it seem like the message is from you – in order to trick people into opening it. If you DO NOT find any strange email in your Sent Folder: Your account has most likely been spoofed. This is what happened to EMDA.

So what can you do about email spoofing?

The short answer is, not much. There are no definitive ways to prevent someone from harvesting your email address from the internet somewhere and using it for spam (EMDA’s web site does list emails, but they are protected with ROT13 encryption). One thing that usually makes it much more difficult for someone to spoof your email is the SPF standard – “Sender Policy Framework.” SPF enables a domain to specify which servers may send emails on its behalf. EMDA’s web domain has always had the SPF standard enabled, but sometimes receiving servers ignore the SPF settings. In light of this latest spoofing, I’ve tightened up some of the SPF parameters.

In any case, here are a few tips to consider if you receive any more spoofed EMDA email:

  • Check the From: field – it should say “EMDA/Patricia A. Collins”
  • Check for spelling errors – ie. their instead of there, or even not capitalizing the letters of the association name
  • General vagueness or bad syntax – ie. Dear “members and friends”, or “inform that our new requirement and platform”
  • Check the To: field – in the copies of the spoof email members sent to me, none of them had the correct To: email address

When in doubt, if an email from EMDA looks at all suspicious, just call or send an email to me.

Registrations are arriving daily for the EMDA Fall Convention to be held this November 7-9 in Houston, and new this year, we’re venturing into using more social media to help us promote the Fall Convention and Industry Showcase with a meeting hashtag – #EMDAhouston

In case you were wondering, the Hyatt Regency Houston hotel has remained dry and fully functioning during the storm. The hotel, located downtown, is about 45’ above sea level but the areas around (and the ones with major flooding) are as low as 3’.

A couple of updates from the Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau:
• Houston’s convention campus / Avenida Houston and surrounding hotels sustained no damage (this includes the Hyatt Regency Houston, site of EMDA’s 2017 Fall Convention).
• Both airports are expected to be operational by the end of the week.

We look forward to adding our support to the Houston economy with our Fall Convention in November.

So, we’ve got a hashtag, now what? Here are some dos and don’ts for tweeting at conferences:

  • Tweet about sessions. If you are participating in a great roundtable discussion, or are really enjoying listening to Mike Mullane at the Joint Opening Session,  tweet about it.
  • Tweet about logistical information that others will find helpful. EMDA will be publishing useful logistical information, and if you’ve got more to add, find a great restaurant, know an easy transportation option, etc.,  let your fellow convention goers know.
  • Don’t tweet anything you over people discussing in a private conversation, and don’t tweet a picture of attendees taken without their knowledge. Be courteous and respectful of privacy. Only tweet information that is public.
  • Don’t tweet misinformation. Check your facts. Say a person launches a tweet about the price of Wi-Fi at the convention hotel. What they may not realize is that the association had negotiated free Wi-Fi for conference participants. But once she tweeted the incorrect information, it started a tidal wave of nasty comments. The organization suffered unfair negative publicity due to one person who tweeted without checking her facts first. [For the record, EMDA members will receive complimentary Wi-Fi in their sleeping rooms at the Hyatt Regency Houston]
  • We can’t wait to see what else members come up with to tweet about — remember to include #EMDAhouston

Kondex launches Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship Program

In response to a growing demand for maintenance professionals within the manufacturing industry, Kondex recently launched a Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship program. This four-year, State-indentured program consists of 8,000 combined hours of classroom and on-the-job training working under the Company’s experienced maintenance mechanics. Schooling can be completed at any participating Wisconsin Technical College, with all tuition, books, and fees paid by Kondex. Upon completion, participants will be recognized as Journeyman Maintenance Mechanics, and be fully prepared for a variety of tasks associated with installing, servicing, and maintaining the proper working condition of production equipment and machinery.

Chad Reinke is Kondex’s first maintenance apprentice to participate in the program. Reinke joined Kondex in 2013 as an advanced machine operator, and transferred to a maintenance role in 2015. Gaining journeyman status will not only benefit Reinke in advancing his career and responsibilities, but will also allow him to be a mentor to future maintenance mechanic apprentices.

“Kondex offers a variety of training and career advancement opportunities to its associates, and we’re excited to add this apprenticeship as another career learning path,” commented HR Representative Kelly Peterson. “We’re pleased that Chad has embraced this opportunity to further develop his skills, and encourage others to explore maintenance as a career option.”
